Lake of the Woods District Stewardship Association

Stewardship of Our Environment

LOWDSA and our members take pride in being active stewards of the environment. Through initiatives like the annual shoreline clean-up, metal waste collection day, partnerships with IISD-ELA, a mobile boat wash program, and educational articles, we work together to protect and preserve our natural surroundings.

IISD-ELA

Take a look around one of the most unique research facilities in the world!

IISD Experimental Lakes Area is one of the world’s most influential freshwater research facilities. This is the only place in the world where scientists can manipulate real lakes, over the long term, to understand what human activity does to fresh water. An exceptional natural laboratory, the Experimental Lakes Area is comprised of 58 small lakes and their watershed set aside for scientific research.

This summer LOWDSA will coordinate bus trips to the Experimental Lakes Area from Kenora and Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls.

Shoreline clean-up

Every year the LakeSmart team organizes several shoreline clean-ups in different areas around Kenora and the Lake of the Woods area. The LakeSmart team encourages anyone in the community who would like to take part in the shoreline clean-ups to take part or to organize your own shoreline clean-up.

Reach out to the LakeSmart team at info@lowdsa.com if you’d like more information or to join in our next clean-up day!

Mobile Boat Wash

LOWDSA’s Boat Wash station provides decontamination for boaters through the use of pressure washers to clean watercraft which significantly reduces the chance of introducing invasive species to water bodies.

LOWDSA’s Vision is to “preserve one of the most beautiful places on earth as a high-quality environment for future generations to enjoy”. For years, LOWDSA has promoted the practice of CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY to boaters, sharing information and promoting every boating enthusiast’s responsibility to CLEAN their watercraft, DRAIN remaining water, and allow the boat to DRY before transferring between bodies of water.

Invasive species continue to change the natural ecosystem of the Lake of the Woods district. The growth of the tourism industry and property development in the area draws more watercraft into the area each year, providing important economic growth however, this increased traffic in our waterways creates more opportunities for invasive species to spread.

Practicing Clean, Drain, Dry through the use of the LOWDSA mobile boat wash station is one of the simplest ways to work together to protect against the spread of invasive species.
