IISD-ELA is a world-class environmental research facility utilizing 58 lakes on Treaty 3 territory in Northwest Ontario. Since 2014, the two-week Experimental Lakes Area Student Experience (ELSE) field course has given groups of eight students between grades 10 and 12 unique experiences in ecological literacy, freshwater research, and systems thinking.
From hands-on fieldwork and lab experience, to a backcountry canoe trip and independent research, ELSE gives students the chance to build skills, confidence, and lifelong connections – while contributing to science that shapes environmental policy world-wide.
