A golf team having fun on the green

A swinging success: Our first-ever Celebrate Lake Life Golf Tournament

The satisfying thwack of a well-hit drive was the soundtrack of our very first Celebrate Lake Life Golf Tournament, and what a day it was! The turnout was fantastic, the weather was perfect, and the energy on the course was contagious. Thanks to the generosity of our players and sponsors, funds raised are going toward invasive species prevention, including new signage for our decontamination station.

Golfers came from all over the area, and even as far as Blackfaulds, Alberta, to join in on the fun. Our mission? Bring family and friends together for a day of friendly competition, all while raising funds for our LakeSmart program. And by the end of the day, we’d done just that and then some.

LakeSmart, brought to you by the Lake of the Woods District Stewardship Association (LOWDSA), is an environmental outreach program unlike any other. Each summer, a team of environmentally educated students criss-crosses the region sharing ways to “live and play green” at the lake. From creating shoreline buffer zones, to preventing invasive species to safe boating, the team delivers both knowledge and action. They host tree sales and plantings, collect heavy metals and electronic waste, lead tours of the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area, run classroom presentations and kids’ programs, and even offer dock talks and boat decontamination. It’s hands-on stewardship at its best and events like this golf tournament make it all possible.

Fifty-six golfers hit the course, with energy high from the very first tee-off. Between swings, players tried their luck at the putting competition, grabbed tickets for the 50/50 draw, and bid on some fantastic silent auction prizes. The competition was fierce, two teams tied at three under par for the nine holes. Cue the sudden-death showdown: two extra holes, then a chipping contest to break the tie. The tension built, and after the final putt dropped, one stroke made the difference, and four very happy golfers claimed the win.

The smiles said it all. From first-time participants to seasoned golfers, everyone left with great memories, a few laughs, and maybe a little extra sun on their cheeks. The rave reviews started rolling in, and the message is clear: we need to do this again.

And we will. With the success of this debut tournament, we’re already dreaming up next year’s event, better, and just as full of heart. A huge thank-you to every golfer, sponsor, and volunteer who joined us. You made this day unforgettable, and your support helps keep our lakes healthy for generations to come.
