Flood Warning Red Lake District

Tuesday, May 24, 2022, 12:30 PM

The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry – Red Lake District is advising area residents that a Flood Warning is in effect in the district until Friday June 3, 2022.

Residents in the Red Lake, Suffel Lake, Dixie Lake, Longlegged Lake, Pakwash Lake, Chukuni River, Coli Lake, Berens Lake, and English River watersheds, and surrounding areas throughout the district should exercise extreme caution around less travelled roads, bridges, water-crossings, lakes, rivers, and areas of high runoff potential, as water levels in portions of the district are high. Water levels may continue to rise throughout the coming days due to precipitation received.

These water levels could lead to road and shoreline property damage. Residents are advised to secure shoreline structures such as boats and docks, among other items/structures.

The Ministry is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions. Further updates will be issued as appropriate.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Description of Current Conditions

Significant rainfall over recent weeks, combined with melting snow, have resulted in high stream flow conditions. Water levels across the district are at or exceeding maximum outflows. With runoff continuing to accumulate and forecasted precipitation, the water levels are expected to continue to rise.

QUICK FACTS

Residents in Unorganized Townships may request sandbags free-of-charge from the Ministry of Northern Developments, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry by calling (807) 728-3425. Government issued identification is required.

Water levels on Red, Keg, Gullrock, Ranger and Two Island Lakes are regulated by the control dam at Snowshoe Rapids on the Chukuni River, at the outlet of the Red Lake system. The dam is operating at full capacity.
